New LRT line in Brasília to be developed as PPP concession

The Secretariat for Transport and Mobility of the Brazilian federal district has announced that a new light rail transit (LRT) line in the Brazilian capital Brasília will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) concession. At the same time, proposals for the development of the 15 km line were presented. Upon completion, the line is to connect the Asa Norte and Asa Sul bus terminals along the W3 road running through the city centre. At Asa Sul, there are interchanges with the Green and Orange metro lines. The new line is supposed to reduce bus traffic on the W3 road. Project costs have been estimated at EUR 443 million (BRL 2.5 billion), of which EUR 266 million will be funded by the federal district. The remaining funds are to be provided by the private partners to be selected under the PPP model, which will also build and operate the line. The contract is to be put out to tender in 2023, and construction works are scheduled to start by early 2024 at the latest.
