Government plans significant cuts in railway sector

The Argentinian government has announced that it will implement the transformation of the railway sector. This follows the resignation of Transport Minister Guillermo Ferraro, who was appointed in December 2023, on 5th March 2024, after which transport was assigned to the Ministry of Economy under Luis Caputo. There are plans for privatisation, extensive discontinuation of services in both regional and long-distance passenger rail transport and major job cuts. For example, regional services in the provinces of Salta, Entre Ríos, Chaco, Santa Fe, and the Buenos Aires region are to be cancelled across the board in the near future. Only a few trains from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata and Tucumán will remain on the regional passenger rail network. The job cuts will mainly affect state-owned regional transport operator SOFSE.
