Government inaugurates first phase of Tren Maya

On 15th December 2023, the Mexican government inaugurated the first phase of the Tren Maya project. The first phase comprises a 473 km section between Campeche and Cancún. The Tren Maya project aims to promote tourism and economic development in the Yucatán Peninsula and plans to expand a 1,525 km network with 34 stations connecting Palenque and Cancún via two corridors through the states of Yucatán, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Chiapas, and Tabasco. The phase that has now been opened is the northern half of the western Gulf Corridor, which essentially follows the course of motorway 180 and serves 14 stations. Alstom is supplying a fleet of 42 multiple-unit trains from its X'Trapolis platform, which are being assembled at the Ciudad Sahagún plant. The entire line is scheduled to go into operation by 29th February 2024.
