Fonatur insists Tren Maya will open in December 2023

The Mexican National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) has insisted on the December 2023 opening date for the Tren Maya railway project. According to Fonatur, track laying has been completed on the 159 km third section, which runs from Calkiní in the state of Campeche to Izamal in Yucatán. Work on the stations along the line is on schedule, with completion rates from west to east at 77% in Calkiní, 82% in Maxcanú, 52% in Umán, 78% in Mérida, 82% in Tixkokob and 67% in Izamal. According to the civil construction company Azvindi Ferroviario, the construction work is almost complete. The three viaducts on the third section are 99.5% complete, and work on 150 of the 153 remaining structures, including earthworks, underpasses, and wildlife culverts, has been completed. The first four-car electric multiple unit (EMU) called Xiinbal supplied by Alstom has already completed over 1,000 km of test runs.
