DARPA awards development of a lunar railway

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded defence technology manufacturer Northrop Grumman to develop a model for a lunar railway to transport people, supplies, and resources to the moon. The study, which is part of a broader, ten-year Lunar Architecture Capability Study, aims to define the necessary interfaces and resources for the construction of a railway network on the moon. In addition, a list of costs, technological and logistical risks will be drawn up, necessary prototypes, demonstrations, and analyses will be identified and modelled for the construction, operation and maintenance of the railway line using robots will be researched.
