Commissioning of Ferrocarril Central imminent

The Ferrocarril Central project is about to go into operation, which is scheduled for April or May 2024. Test runs are currently being carried out between the port of Montevideo and the plant of the Finnish forestry company UPM-Kymmene in Pueblo Centenario to check the operational readiness of the line. These test runs include a Stadler Euro4001 locomotive as well as 12 freight wagons for the transport of cellulose and 6 empty freight wagons for the transport of chemical products. Over the next few months, the signalling on the tracks is to be completed, the traffic control centre put into operation and comprehensive train running tests completed. From April or May 2024, UPM-Kymmene's rail freight transport service is scheduled to begin, while at the same time offering an rail freight transport service for other companies, managed by Servicios Logísticos Ferroviarios.
