Amtrak invests €113 million in Harrisburg Line

Amtrak will invest around €113 million (US$122 million) in improving the railway infrastructure on the Harrisburg Line in Pennsylvania in order to renew the line between Lancaster and Harrisburg. Work will start immediately and is expected to be completed in just under half of the originally estimated two years. The project will renew 69 km of track, replace nearly 100% of the rails in this area, lay 113,000 concrete sleepers, and clean and resurface the entire ballast bed along the line to support the track structure and improve drainage. The concrete sleepers, which have an expected lifespan of 60 years, will be manufactured in Bear, Delaware, while the ballast will be sourced from a quarry in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania. There will be significant line closures until November 2024 due to the construction work. During this time, trains between Lancaster and Harrisburg will be replaced by buses.
