VDB records revenue growth of 14.7% in railway industry in H1/2023

The German Railway Industry Association (VDB) has reported a record industry revenue of €7.8 billion for the first half of 2023 (H1/2023), which corresponds to an increase of 14.7% compared to H1/2022. Most of this growth was generated abroad, with exports accounting for around 40% of total revenue. Here, revenue rose from €1.7 billion to €3.1 billion, while domestic revenue declined by €400 million or 5% to €4.7 billion. Both the vehicle sector and infrastructure saw significant growth in international revenue. Domestically, however, the vehicle industry weakened, while infrastructure remained constant at €1.3 billion. Incoming orders grew to €12.2 billion in H1/2023, up 35.6% on the H1/2022 figure of €9 billion. Foreign orders almost doubled: at €4.8 billion, they were 84.6% higher than the H1/2022 figure of €2.6 billion. The growth was spread across both the vehicle sector and infrastructure. Total incoming orders rose by 33.8% to €9.5 billion in the vehicle sector and by 42.1% to €2.7 billion in the infrastructure sector.
