Turku City Council approves plans for LRT line

On 2nd October 2023, the City Council of the Finnish city of Turku approved the further development of plans for a light rail transit (LRT) line, following two years of development and consultation. The double-track line is to run 12 km from Satama in the west through the city centre to Varissuo in the east. The cost of the infrastructure is €344 million, with a 30% contribution from the national government, while an additional €42 million is for the vehicles. Turun Raitiotie, the company responsible for LRT planning and implementation, will now select the most suitable project structure and prepare an urban development plan for the LRT line and its surroundings. An implementation plan will be presented to the city council at the end of 2025 to enable an investment decision, with the goal of starting work in 2026 and opening the line in 2031.
