On 2nd November 2022, the Swiss Minister of Transport, Simonetta Sommaruga, announced her resignation from all offices at the end of 2022. She has been a Federal Councillor since September 2010 and head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (UVEK) since the beginning of 2019. The reason for her decision was her husband's stroke in October 2022. She now wants to change the focus of her life, and being a Federal Councillor can only be done with full commitment. Before taking over UVEK, Sommaruga headed the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) from November 2010 to the end of 2018.
