RSRG and Swietelsky win construction contract for superstructure and power supply on Gäubahn line

The railway technology company Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group (RSRG) and the construction company Swietelsky have been awarded the contract for the superstructure and power supply of the Gäubahn line between Stuttgart Airport and Böblingen in a joint venture (JV). This project is the first major project of German state railway DB to be realised using the rail partnership model. The goal of the contract model is to realise major projects quickly, to a high standard of quality, at optimum cost, and on schedule by involving all key project partners at an early stage in the planning phase. For the superstructure, the work includes the construction of the slab track in the twin-track Pfaffensteig tunnel, which is around 11 km long, as well as the ballast superstructure and switches. For the power supply, the contract includes the installation of 50 Hz systems, underground cable construction, the ventilation of the connecting structures, the construction of transformer stations, switch heating systems, concrete switch houses, noise protection walls, and a platform adaptation at the Böblingen-Goldberg station. The consortium's first task is to submit the documents for planning approval for the Pfaffensteig tunnel to the German Federal Railway Authority (EBA) as early as April 2024. With the expansion of the Gäubahn line, the Zurich – Stuttgart line will be upgraded for the German regular-interval service.
