Government seeks majority stake in GySEV by acquiring Strabag shares

The Hungarian government is seeking to acquire Austrian construction company Strabag's 6.2% stake in Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurter Eisenbahn AG (GySEV). Hungary already owns 65.6% of GySEV, while Austria owns 28.2%. Strabag had bought its shares 15 years ago for €6.4 million (US$7 million) from Speditions Holding, which, as a subsidiary of the Rail Cargo Group, was forced to sell its stake in GySEV. With the additional 6.2% stake, Hungary would own over two thirds of GySEV and would have the right to make decisions at board level without the consent of the Austrian state. This move comes after Hungary dismissed Hana Dellaman, Deputy General Director of GySEV and Director of the Austrian branch of the railway, on 2nd November 2023. Austria has filed a lawsuit against this.
