Record investments planned in railway infrastructure

Russia is planning record investments in the railway infrastructure of the Trans-Siberian Railway (Transsib) and the Baikal-Amur Main Line (BAM). The planned expenditure for the lines amounts to €4.1 billion (RUB 400 billion) in 2024, a significant increase compared to €2.6 billion in 2023 and €1.4 billion in 2022. The maintenance and modernisation work currently underway is estimated at €9 billion. The aim is to increase the throughput capacity of the Transsib and BAM lines to 180 million t by 2025 and 255 million t by 2030. The current investments are part of a long-term expansion strategy that Russia developed in the early 2010s. In addition, Russian state railway RZD announced new preliminary plans for Transsib and BAM, which include three new development phases up to 2028, 2029, and 2031. The declared aim of these plans is to achieve a combined throughput of 255 million t per year by 2032.
