Planning phase of Hudson Gateway Tunnel begins

On 6th July 2023, the design phase of the new Hudson River Tunnel between New York and New Jersey began, allowing it to advance to the next phase of the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Capital Investment Grants (CIG) programme, making nearly €6.1 billion (US$6.9 billion) available to fund the project. The prerequisite is compliance with the CIG's legal requirements, such as securing non-federal equity. The planning phase includes the laying of utility lines, the procurement of materials and specialised equipment, and the acquisition of land. The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) was also awarded a €22.3 million contract by the US Department of Transportation for the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge and utility relocation project in North Bergen, New Jersey, where the tunnel opening is planned. The total value of the project is €15.3 billion, with completion scheduled for 2035.
