PKP and UZ sign agreement to improve cross-border rail services

Polish rail freight transport operator PKP S.A. and Ukrainian state railway UZ have reached a new agreement to improve rail freight and passenger rail transport between the countries, ensuring safe and uninterrupted cross-border services. The agreement stipulates that trans-shipment between freight wagons with different track gauges of 1,520 and 1,435 mm on both sides of the Polish-Ukrainian border may be realised after prior agreement and no longer only by the receiving carrier of the goods. In addition, a train will be used for rail freight transport between the two border stations of the countries, half of which will be operated by Polish and half by Ukrainian vehicles and personnel. In addition, PKP will develop measures to manage rail infrastructure, rail freight and passenger rail transport, and set up working groups to develop projects for separate agreements. The agreement is the first joint project since 1994 to strengthen rail freight and passenger rail transport between the countries.
