Passenger service starts on western section of Koralm line

With the timetable change on 10th December 2023, regular passenger rail transport began on the 53 km western section of the Koralm rail line. This section connects Klagenfurt, St. Paul im Lavanttal and Wolfsberg. The work on the Carinthian section of the Koralm line required several interventions, including the modernisation of existing lines, the improvement of connecting and diversion lines and the construction of new lines. The Koralm railway project includes the construction of a 250 km/h line, including a 33 km base tunnel to connect Klagenfurt with Graz. The opening of the remaining sections from St. Paul to Graz is planned for December 2025. The European Union (EU) has so far contributed €543 million from the NextGenerationEU recovery plan to finance the Koralm railway project.
