Opening of the Izmir Metro Line 1 extension

The western extension of Izmir Metro Line 1, a 7 km section from Fahrettin Altay to Sehitlik, was opened for service on 24th February 2024. It is expected that the last remaining station, Kaymakamlik, which covers another 1 km, will be opened in the coming days. Once the entire line is fully operational, trains will run at shorter intervals. The contract for the construction work was signed in June 2018 with a volume of €252 million, but the construction costs rose to €287 million. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has provided funding totalling €80 million for the construction.
