ÖBB and Siemens Mobility sign framework agreement to expand ETCS

ÖBB Infrastruktur and Siemens Mobility have signed a framework contract worth €400 million to upgrade the rail network in Austria with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2. Under the contract, which is based on a Europe-wide tender, the Linz – Wels – Vöcklabruck line section was already modernised at the beginning of August 2023. The construction of 21 wayside Radio Block Centres (RBC) and the connection to the cloud-based DS3 signal box technology from Siemens is also planned by 2038. ÖBB's framework plan provides for funds totalling €900 million for the nationwide upgrade to ETCS Level 2.
