Nokia and Siemens to deploy communications network at Sydney Metro West

Nokia and Siemens Mobility have been awarded a contract to supply a communications network for the Sydney Metro West project currently under construction. The 23 km suburban rail line, which will increase capacity between the new Western Sydney International Airport, due to open in 2026, and Sydney's business district, will rely on the two companies' technology to ensure safety and communications. The systems provided by Nokia and Siemens include CCTV for passenger security and train-to-ground communications, as well as associated data centre and cloud network operations. In addition, measures such as multi-level authentication and automated endpoint detection will be used to protect the systems and data from new threats. Despite concerns about the rising costs of the project, an independent report recommended its completion in December 2023. However, completion has been delayed by two years to 2032.
