National Assembly releases €3 billion for railway expansion

On 31st October 2022, the French National Assembly passed an amendment providing an additional €3 billion for the development of rail transport in France. However, the Minister of Transport was opposed to this proposal, as was the government, which was seen as another setback for the government in the budget battle. According to media reports, investments in the railway network have been neglected in the recent past. However, the government has the option of rejecting this amendment, as it intends to once again use § 49.3 of the French constitution, which allows for the adoption of a text given by the government without a vote. French state railway SNCF has put the investment needs in the railway sector at around €100 billion over 15 years in order to contribute to the decarbonisation of transport by doubling the share of rail.
