Most passenger operators are private

In Brazil, most passenger rail transport operators are already private, which is being encouraged by the process of privatising the network in operation. According to figures from the National Association of passenger rail transport companies ANP Trilhos, 56% of the 16 operators are private. The number of users increased by 6% in 2023, reaching 2.48 billion passengers transported. However, the level is still far from the figures before the coronavirus pandemic, when around 3.26 billion passengers were transported in 2019. The network in operation recorded a slight increase in 2023 with a network length of 4.1 km, spread over 48 lines. The increase was recorded on the light rail transit (LRT) network in Natal and on the Salvador metro network. The national network is currently 1,133.4 km long. Suburban rail networks represent the largest infrastructure in operation with 536 km of track. The metro networks are 307.5 km long, LRT networks 274.6 km, monorail lines 14.5 km, and the people mover is only 800 m long. The vehicle fleet comprises 4,876 passenger cars that serve the 631 stations throughout Brazil. The workforce in the sector totals 40,700 employees.
