Mitma to invest €468 million in Algeciras – Zaragoza line

The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (Mitma) has launched an investment programme worth €468 million for the development of the railway line between Algeciras and Zaragoza. As part of the project, the line is to be developed into a railway motorway, i.e. a special corridor for rail freight transport. The measures include two contracts worth €110 million, which provide for the adaptation of the track gauge in 26 tunnels and 40 overpasses on the Madrid – Zaragoza line to enable the transport of semi-trailers. The investments also include the modernisation of the signalling system, the extension of sidings at stations to 750 m and the improvement of infrastructure at key points. There are currently seven lines in operation for railway motorway services, with six more in the analysis phase. The comprehensive programme will improve the infrastructure of 174 structures, including 43 tunnels and 131 overpasses. The project also includes the implementation of an automated block signalling system between Guadalajara and Calatayud.
