Mitma increases funding for Cercanías Madrid to over €7 billion

The Spanish Ministry of Transport (Mitma) has increased funding for regional passenger rail transport in Madrid by more than €2 billion to around €7.1 billion. The money from the plan for Madrid's regional Cercanías network will go to Spanish state railway Renfe and infrastructure operator Adif to increase capacity, punctuality and service quality. Adif will receive €1.7 billion more, around €1.2 billion more for new measures and €542 million due to redefinition of ongoing projects. Renfe will receive €289.5 million more for strengthening operations. The revised and improved plan thus provides for 40% more investment than in 2018. In March 2023, after a first revision, the budget has already been increased to almost €6.7 billion.
