Metro-DF plans to expand metro lines and procure 15 metros

The operator of the metro network in the Brazilian federal district of Brasilia, Metro-DF, has presented a financing plan for three to five years with total costs of around €466 million (BRL 2.5 billion), which provides for the procurement of additional metros and the introduction of automatic train operation (ATO). The financing is to be provided by contributions from the federal government, the Federal District of Brasilia (GDF), and from the operator's own funds in order to mobilise investments in the 42 km network from the Brazilian Federal Economic Bank CEF and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development BNDES. GDF has already applied to the Ministry of Cities for €243 million, of which around €168 million are earmarked for the purchase of 15 new metros for the network. An estimated €75 million will be needed to convert the network to ATO, for which funds have already been requested from the federal government. Around €224 million will be required for the construction of two planned extensions, which are still in the planning phase and have been partially financed. In January 2023, Metro-DF invited tenders for the construction of a 2.3 km extension of the Green Line from its current terminus at Ceilandia with two new stations.
