Luxtram presents plans to extend LRT network

Luxtram, the operator of Luxembourg's light rail transit (LRT) network, has presented further plans to extend the LRT network together with the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the city of Luxembourg. The new LRT section to Cloche d'Or is scheduled to go into operation on 7th July 2024. Work on the extension to Findel Airport is to continue in close collaboration with the Bridges and Roads Administration, with start of operations planned for early 2025. In addition, the construction of an LRT section is planned, which will run between Cloche d'Or and Leudelange from 2028, to Foetz from 2030, to Metzeschmelz in Esch-sur-Alzette in 2032 and finally to Belval in 2035. This extension includes 13 new stations and five new interchange points on a total length of 17.5 km. The LRT network realised by 2035 will double capacity and be able to transport up to 200,000 passengers a day. A new stabling and maintenance centre will also be built in Cloche d'Or. Plans for 2024 include the start of environmental impact assessments and studies, as well as the submission of draft financing legislation. Construction work on various sections is scheduled to begin in 2025.
