The Portuguese government plans to invest a total of €1.34 billion in the development of railway infrastructure and public transport in 2024, an increase of 23% compared to 2023. Of this amount, €717 million will go towards new metro lines in Porto and Lisbon and a new transport system in the Mondego region. The remaining €627 million is allocated for the modernisation of the national railway network and the purchase of new vehicles. In addition, the purchase of 46 new vehicles for the Lisbon and Porto metros and the continuation of the rehabilitation of existing rail vehicles have been approved. Metro Porto is to receive up to €10 million for preliminary studies on four new light rail transit (LRT) lines.
