Government to propose Transnordestina extension and 6 new concessions under PAC

The Brazilian federal government is planning to propose the construction of an extension of the Transnordestina rail line, as well as the study of six new railway concessions under the Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC). The programme was launched on 11th August 2023. In previous releases, however, leases were not part of the infrastructure package. The Transnordestina extension will be located in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco and will run from Salgueiro to Porto de Suape, which is 50 km from Recife. Another four projects will be on railway lines that have already started: the West-East Integration Railway (FIOL), the Juiz de Fora line in Minas Gerais, the Barra Mansa line in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Central-West Integration Railway (FICO). In addition, there will be six studies of new concessions under the PAC: the connection of Transnordestina to the north-south line (FNS), the Teresina – Luís Correia line in Piauí, the EF-118 from Rio de Janeiro to Vitória, the Frango Railway in Santa Catarina, as well as two FNS extensions, one from Chapecó in Santa Catarina to Rio Grande in Rio Grande do Sul and another from Estrela D’Oeste in São Paulo via Panorama to Chapecó in Santa Catarina.
