Government plans to invest €1.1 billion in public transport

The New Zealand government has announced an investment of €1.1 billion (NZ$2 billion) in public transport. The investment will also fund rail projects, such as the completion of the City Rail Link in Auckland and the Lower North Island Rail Integrated Mobility (LNIRIM) programme in Wellington, which includes the provision and upgrading of substations and the replacement of rolling stock for the Wairarapa and Manawatu lines. Despite the 71% increase in public transport funding over the last five years, usage has fallen by 23%, in part due to coronavirus.
