Government allocates €4 billion for public transport infrastructure

The Dutch government has allocated funds worth €4 billion from its budget to be invested in public transport infrastructure. A particular focus will be on connections to new housing developments to improve their reachability. Over 400,000 new homes are planned to be built in the Netherlands by 2030. The government will invest in both major new projects and improvements to existing lines, with provinces and municipalities to contribute funding. To support the construction of 77,000 new homes along the railway network by 2040, €1.56 billion will be provided to upgrade the Leiden – The Hague – Rotterdam – Dordrecht line, which is to be widened to four tracks between Delft Campus and Schiedam Centrum to enable the frequency of Sprinter services to be increased. Moreover, railway stations will be refurbished to create public transport hubs and new stations will be built at Rijswijk Buiten, Schiedam Kethel, Rotterdam Van Nelle and Dordrecht Leerpark. Other projects to benefit from the investments include the light rail transit (LRT) networks in Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam, with the latter also to receive grants for its metro network.
