Gibraltar tunnel to Morocco being considered again

The governments of Spain and Morocco have revived talks of an underground tunnel project to connect the two countries by rail through the Strait of Gibraltar. The 30 km tunnel between Tarifa and Tangier is estimated to cost €5 billion and would take 15 years to build. Every year, 9.6 million passengers and 6 million t of goods could be transported through the tunnel. During a meeting between the two governments, two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were also signed, one of which concerns transport. This states that both countries can cooperate in the development of railway infrastructure and the use of railway operations and transport, including the maintenance of rolling stock, the planning of workshops, the training of railway personnel and the introduction and use of railway traffic management systems.
