FRA invests €1.3 billion in rail improvement projects

The US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has allocated more than €1.3 billion (US$1.4 billion) from President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for 70 rail improvement projects in 35 states and Washington, DC. Amtrak and the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) are the main beneficiaries of the investment, receiving a combined €382.4 million. Amtrak will receive up to €169.7 million for the Gulf Coast Corridor Improvement Project, which will enable the reintroduction of twice-daily passenger train service between New Orleans and Mobile in 2024. In partnership with Canadian National and the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, Amtrak will receive up to €1.7 million for the Mississippi – Louisiana Grade Crossing Improving Project. In addition, Amtrak will receive up to €8.4 million for its Workforce Development Apprenticeship Training programme and a similar amount for the Northeast Corridor (NEC) fencing scheme. The CHSRA will receive nearly €192.1 million for the design, purchase of land and construction of six tram grade separations in Shafter.
