Femern tenders construction of track and overhead systems in Fehmarnbelt tunnel

Project promoter Femern has published a tender for a major contract to build the track and overhead line systems in the Fehmarnbelt tunnel. The tender covers a double-track railway line designed for 200 km/h with overhead lines, of which about 18 km are in the tunnel itself and a total of 7 km outside the tunnel on the Danish and German sides. The contract to be awarded is worth more than €200 million. Femern requires bidders to demonstrate significant annual revenues and equity capital as well as experience in similar major projects. In addition, strict requirements are set for the specified schedule, environmental-friendly solutions and working conditions. To prepare for the tender, Femern had already produced a thorough market survey in 2022, which included interviews with the industry. The goal was to get an overview of the current climate-friendly and energy-efficient solutions. Femern expects the pre-qualification to take place in summer 2023. This will be followed by a negotiation phase with the pre-qualified bidders, which is expected to end with the award of the contract in late 2024. Installation work is expected to start in early 2025.
