The Stuttgart Regional Assembly has decided to extend the suburban rail network, including the extension of the S1 line to Geislingen an der Steige, the S5 line to Vaihingen (Enz) and the integration of the Schusterbahn line from Esslingen to Walheim. The decisions are based on feasibility studies that confirm the benefits and cost-effectiveness of the measures. The StuKiX strategy, which would operate regional trains via Stuttgart Central Station and the airport railway station in the direction of Kirchheim, currently has more long-term potential. Other measures were favoured for the S2 line to Plüderhausen and the extension of the S3 and S4 to Murrhardt due to infrastructure and financing challenges.
