In October 2023, German state railway DB awarded Austrian energy company European Trans Energy (Europten) two major contracts for the electrification of the Eifelstrecke rail line with a volume of over €80 million. The work, which has already begun, is scheduled for completion by December 2026 and concerns two sections in the West and Centre DB regions. At the beginning of 2023, Europten had already been awarded a contract for the electrification of the restored Ahrtal line with a volume of around €11 million, which is scheduled for completion in May 2025. Europten is also responsible for another project on the Voreifel rail line, which means that the company is realising a total of four projects for DB in the region with a total volume of over €100 million. The Eifelstrecke line is being restored after a flood disaster in 2021.
