€25 million released for modernisation of the Manchester Metrolink

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has been awarded funding of €25 million (GB£21.4 million) for the modernisation of Metrolink Light-Rail Transit (LRT) in Manchester. The funding comes from the government's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement funding programme and is to be spent within the next 12 months. This funding is part of a planned €172 million investment package to maintain, modernise, and improve the LRT between now and 2027. Another part of the programme includes modifications to the light rail vehicles (LRVs), including the installation of speed warning systems and sensors in the middle of double LRVs. TfGM is also looking at replacing the 750 V DC overhead contact line systems on some of the older parts of the LRT.
