€21.1 billion for expansion of railway infrastructure up to 2029

The Austrian Ministry of Climate Protection has approved investments of €21.1 billion for Austrian state railway ÖBB's 2024-2029 framework plan for the expansion of railway infrastructure. The framework plan includes investments in major projects such as the Semmering Base Tunnel, the Koralm railway and the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT), as well as the expansion of regional passenger rail transport in conurbations and an electrification programme. Furthermore, some of the investments will be used for digitalisation and the expansion of train-length passing tracks for freight transport. In addition to the €21.1 billion, around €4.7 billion is allocated for the maintenance of existing infrastructure assets in the 2024-2029 period.
