The European Union (EU) has announced a grant of up to €600 million for the development of the 230 km high-speed rail (HSR) TEN-T Corridor X between Belgrade and Nis in Serbia. The funding is part of a €2.2 billion financial package, of which the EU has already approved €265 million, for upgrading line speeds of up to 200 km/h. A loan of €1.1 billion will be granted by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and a loan of €500 million will be granted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as part of the financial package. The upgrading is scheduled to start in 2024 and will be realised in three phases, starting with the Belgraded – Velika Plana section, followed by the Velika Plana – Paracin and Paracin – Nis sections.
