EC approves more than €425 million for east-west link in Warsaw

The European Commission (EC) has approved over €425 million from the Cohesion Fund for the modernisation of the railway link between eastern and western Warsaw. In the first expansion phase, train connections between important Polish cities such as Katowice and Bialystok are to be improved. The project will be financed from the 2014-2020 planning period. It is planned to renew the tracks, overhead lines, telecommunications systems, and water and wastewater systems. In addition, railway stations will be modernised and new overpasses as well as pedestrian bridges and underpasses will be built to enable speeds of up to 160 km/h in some sections.
