DB equipping Leipzig – Dresden line with ETCS

German state railway DB is starting to convert the line between Leipzig and Dresden to the European Train Control System (ETCS) in order to drive forward digitalisation. The technical equipping and adaptation of the signal boxes and train control systems will be the first step. From 19th to 24th November 2023, a software change will be realised at the Wurzen electronic control centre, which will involve modifications to the control and safety technology. This will lead to a closure of the line between Leipzig and Riesa. At the same time, work will be realised on other electronic control centres and signals will be relocated or newly installed. The linear train control system is also being replaced and is scheduled to start operation with the 2024 timetable change. This will enable speeds of up to 200 km/h between Leipzig-Engelsdorf and Oschatz.
