Danube-Iller Regio-S-Bahn network to be electrified

On 8th February 2024, the German federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg presented plans to electrify a large part of the Donau-Iller Regio-S-Bahn network. The project includes the electrification of the main lines, which are mainly operated with diesel vehicles, as well as the construction of new stations. A jointly awarded cost-benefit analysis has produced very positive results, so that the transport ministries of both states are expecting to receive federal funding via the Municipal Transport Financing Act GVFG. Key projects in the programme include the electrification of the 72.5 km Brenzbahn line from Ulm to Aalen, for which the GVFG is expected to cover around two thirds of the estimated costs of €450 million. Baden-Württemberg has agreed to finance the remaining amount, including the portion that would normally be borne by Bavaria. Furthermore, the electrification of the 85 km Illertalbahn line to Kempten is planned, for which Bavaria signed a contract with German state railway DB on 8th February 2024 for design and planning work. Bavaria is providing €41 million for the electrification. Electrification of the Senden – Weissenhorn line is also planned.
