CRBC completes feasibility study for reconstruction of Phnom Penh – Poipet line

The China Road and Bridge Corp (CRBC) has completed a feasibility study for the reconstruction of the 382 km line from Phnom Penh to Poipet on the Thai border. On 24th January 2023, the study was subsequently submitted to the Cambodian government. The study evaluated the potential for electrification and re-gauging the existing metre-gauge line to 1,435 mm to enable speeds to be raised to 160 km/h. In addition, the study estimated the costs at around €3.7 billion (US$4 billion) including rolling stock. This would be financed through a Chinese loan. A total of 33 stations will be built, 19 in the initial phase and the remainder in the longer term. More than 300 bridges would replace level crossings.
