Construction starts on second phase of Budapest's southern railway ring

On 15th January 2024, construction work began on the second phase of the southern railway ring extension project in Budapest. The project includes the extension of the line between Kelenföld and Ferencváros to four tracks over a distance of 1.7 km to Tétényi út and to three tracks for the next 2 km to the Danube Bridge. The section from the Pest bridgehead to the western branch of Ferencváros will also be expanded to four tracks. The main contractor is V-Híd. As part of the project, which is estimated to be worth €878 million (HUF 338 billion), work began on the Buda side of the city with the removal of trees along the planned track extension. The triple-track expansion of the 500 m long Danube bridge was already completed in August 2022 as the first step of the modernisation. There are also plans to build three new railway stations at Népliget, Közvágóhíd, and Nádorkert. To cover the costs, the government is seeking co-financing from the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) fund.
