China has become the most important investor in Serbia due to its ambitions under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). According to Bojan Stanić, Deputy Director of the Strategic Analysis Department at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, China has started investing in the cities of Bor, Smederevo and Zrenjanin. As early as August 2022, Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin stated in a letter to former Chinese Minister Wang Xiaohong that the two countries would maintain a close friendship, with the railway playing an important role, according to Vulin.
