Change of gauge judged not cost-effective

According to a report published on 12th April 2023 by the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications (LVM), the introduction of European standard gauge in Finland is not cost-effective. Preliminary estimates of the study have shown that the costs of the options studied are significant in relation to the benefits. The study shows that the alternatives are not viable from a transport perspective alone. On the other hand, possible changes also need to be assessed from the point of view of security of supply and other major infrastructure investments. The study is based on a proposal by the European Commission that new railway lines within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) must be built with the European standard gauge without exception.
