Caltrain has completed and successfully tested the electrification of the eponymous Californian mass transit corridor between San Francisco and San Jose. In cooperation with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and Balfour Beatty, an overhead contact line, two main traction substations in San Jose and South San Francisco, a switchyard, and seven parallel stations were installed to supply power to the overhead contact line. The conversion of regional passenger rail transport from diesel multiple units (DMUs) to the new electric multiple units (EMUs) of the Kiss type from manufacturer Stadler is scheduled to take place from September 2024.
