Budapest railway projects stopped due to budgetary restrictions

The Hungarian government under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stopped all major projects in the Budapest region by decree 1389/2023 of 5th September 2023 due to budgetary restrictions. Among the projects affected are the modernisation of the HÉV rapid railways, the continuation of the Southern Ring Railway, the upgrading of the Outer Ring Railway for urban transport and the modernisation and extension of the M1 Millennium Metro. The construction of a new Danube tunnel for mainline and rapid transit is also affected. The only exception is the 3rd track of the Southern Ring Railway between the Danube and Kelenföld station, of which the completion is still planned. The preparation of the V0 freight bypass including a new Danube crossing south of Budapest is also continuing.
