Broad-gauge line to Ukraine requires parliamentary approval

The Polish parliament is about to decide to authorise investment in a 1,520 mm wide railway link with Ukraine, which could increase Ukrainian grain exports and be profitable for Poland. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, the link will facilitate the transport of Ukrainian grain and offer Poland the opportunity to benefit from its transit. The Polish parliament could approve the investment through a simplified procedure that has already been used for other infrastructure projects. Poland and Ukraine had previously reached a preliminary agreement on this issue. The broad-gauge line is intended to connect Ukraine with the Polish port of Gdansk and the port of Klaipeda in Lithuania. Currently, goods with different track gauges have to be reloaded at the border between Poland and Ukraine, which costs time and reduces competitiveness.
