Automated metro lines could double in length by 2030

According to a study by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and management consultants Roland Berger, the length of automated metro lines could double to over 3,400 km by 2030. According to the study, there were 1,686 km of lines equipped with Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) in 2023. Of these, 56% were in the heavy metro sector, while GoA4 metro lines represent only 9% of the total length of all metro lines worldwide. The study also found that around 50 GoA4 metro projects with a total length of 1,751 km are currently being implemented. As a result, the total length of the GoA4 metro lines will exceed the 3,400 km mark by 2030. The Asia-Pacific region and Europe were identified as the main growth regions for metro networks.
