A consortium of Thales and Orascom Construction has signed a contract with Egypt's National Railway ENR worth €300 million to upgrade the 125 km Cairo – Giza – Benif Suef double-track line. The project includes track renewal, signalling and telecommunication systems, cyber security upgrades, as well as the supply of new electronic interlockings and a central control room. The contract is part of the World Bank-funded RISE project, which aims to improve the safety and reliability of Egypt's railways.
