Siemens developing LRT project in Luanda

Rail technology supplier Siemens Mobility has confirmed that it is working with the Angolan Ministry of Transport to develop a light rail transit (LRT) project in Luanda. The announcement refers to a decree dated 22nd March 2023, which is part of the process to establish an LRT network for Luanda. The project, which foresees a 39 km double-track LRT line with 24 stations, has already been discussed in two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in December 2019 and February 2020 between Siemens Mobility and the Angolan Ministry of Transport, and is now in the development phase. The Yellow Line, which will connect the port of Luanda with the city of Kilamba, is expected to be served by 68 four-car light rail vehicles (LRV). The project has a budget of €1.3 billion.
